Is online therapy right for you?

Are you ready for a change but concerned about your busy schedule or the recent societal changes affecting your day to day life?

If you are a legal resident of Texas searching for a convenient alternative to in-person therapy but just don’t have the time or space for therapy in your life, or perhaps you are too overwhelmed with stress and daily preoccupations to even think of navigating traffic to visit a therapist’s office, you may be the perfect candidate for online therapy. While I offer standard, in-person sessions, I also bring that same level of quality and expertise to my online clients. Whether you are looking for help dealing with depression, anxiety, relationship issues, or if you just need some additional support in your life, online therapy can help.

Many individuals who could benefit from our service simply don’t know enough about the process to feel comfortable with initiating sessions. Please check out our list of frequently asked questions below for more information:

What exactly is the difference between online and traditional therapy?

The only real difference is that instead of meeting with a therapist in-person at a set location, you get to work from wherever you would like to via the internet or phone. I can accommodate almost any schedule, whether you want to schedule an appointment during your lunch break, before you start your day, or just when you have a little free time. Rather than trekking across town, you can meet with me online directly from home, the office, or even your car. This type of service meets you where you are and conforms to your personal needs for safety, comfort, and convenience.

Is online counseling effective?

Extensive research into the efficacy of video-based therapy sessions has shown that there is no difference in the effectiveness of online versus traditional counseling methods. In fact, many clients are more inclined to open up and share their stories when they feel at ease. That’s one of the reasons why virtual therapy can be so powerful.

Why virtual therapy rather than traditional therapy?

I understand that life can get in the way of self-care, and I want to make sure that there was one less obstacle for my clients to overcome. Online sessions are incredibly convenient, eliminating the hassle of taking off from work, finding a sitter for the kids, navigating traffic, fighting bad weather, spending money on gas, or simply finding the motivation to go.

Plus, wait times are shorter, there’s greater anonymity, and you have greater flexibility in scheduling—including Saturdays, early morning, afternoon, and evening hours. And if you live in a rural area, or if you are having a hard time finding a professional who can offer the services you need, online sessions are the perfect resource. By eliminating all of those distractions and deterrents, you can finally concentrate on taking care of yourself without stressing about it.

Is there any added benefit of online therapy?

One of the surprising benefits of video-based therapy is that it potentially allows me to see who you really are within the context of your real life. All too often, in-person sessions force clients to assume unrealistic versions of themselves. Online therapy gives me a unique perspective, allowing me to pick up on additional bodily or emotional cues that otherwise might not be noticeable in a traditional setting. That added level of insight can help me develop a treatment strategy that is more individualized and tailored to meet your needs.

What can online sessions help with?

Whether you are recovering from infidelity, struggling with depression, or working your way through a tough transition, I can help. I also offer online couples therapy in addition to my individual online sessions.

What will I need in order to use this service?

It’s really quite easy. You only need four things: 1) a PC, laptop, phone, or tablet with a microphone and camera; 2) a stable and reliable internet connection; and 3) a quiet place where you can talk freely. I will send you a unique, confidential link to access your video session with me. Other than that, you just need a desire for personal growth and a willingness to move forward.

As with face to face therapy, you will set up a convenient appointment time. At the scheduled appointment time, I will reach you by the agreed upon method. Appointments are usually scheduled in 45-50 minute increments, however I do offer longer time slots and welcome you to discuss additional needs and extended times with me.

How secure is this service?

I want to assure you that all of our video sessions are held to the highest possible level of confidentiality. I use a secure, HIPPA-compliant link that represents the highest standard of protection in the healthcare field. And because there are no in-person office visits required, unless you choose, you are the only person who knows you are speaking with a therapist.

Are there any reasons why online therapy may not be for me?

Unfortunately, my services are only available to legal residents of the state of Texas. I also do not conduct therapy sessions via chats or texts because I feel that it is just not as efficacious. Furthermore, if you are in a crisis, having suicidal thoughts, or if you are in imminent danger, I implore you to call 911 for immediate help.

Online therapy is not the same as face-to-face psychotherapy and is not an appropriate treatment for all clients. There are pros and cons to both methods. Online therapy is not appropriate if your presenting issue is an emergency, if you are having suicidal or homicidal thoughts, if you are addicted to drugs or alcohol or if you need a medical diagnosis or prescription.

I will conduct a screening prior to engaging in online therapy to make sure it is a good fit for you. If it is determined that you would be better served via face-to-face methods, I will assist you with locating an appropriate referral. My office is located in Frisco, Tx.
